Distretto Tecnologico Sicilia Micro e Nano SistemiThe Distretto Tecnologico Sicilia Micro e Nano Sistemi (Technological District Sicily Micro and Nano Systems) was founded in August the 1st 2008 in form of a consortium, based on a National agreement between the Italian Government and the Sicilian Regional District. The District, based in Sicily, which is the biggest region of Italy, nowadays can count on the aggregation of 22 different research and development enterprises (both private firms and public companies) that work on micro-nano technologies (micro-nano technologies is one of the six primary development branch of the Regional Strategic Plan for innovation in Sicily) and in the fields of Health & Biotechnology, Energy, and Agricultural & Food. The Consortium owns really strong competencies due to the fact that among its parties it includes several national and global firms dedicated to research, development and experimentation of micro-nano industrial systems. Just to mention some of these private firms€¦ - ST Microlectronic, one of the world leader in providing semiconductor solutions that give a positive contribution to people's lives; - SIFI, that made the history of ophthalmology in Italy and has worked in the EyeCare sector since 1935; - ISMETT (the Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione) that is a joint public-private partnership between the Region of Sicily, through Civico and Cervello hospitals in Palermo, and UPMC, an integrated global health enterprise headquartered in Pittsburgh, USA; - ITALTEL that - since the year 1921 - designs, develops and implements, in Italy and in many other countries worldwide, products and solutions for networks and next-generation communications services; - Corvallis, one of the first IT service companies in the Italian market; - Engeneering, leader in software and IT services in Italy, with more than 7,000 IT specialists; - IBM Italia, the Italian branch of the world-wide leader in technologies, research, Hw, Sw, and consulting. Furthermore, referring to the National public system of research as parties of the Consortium, is important to consider€¦ - the CNR, the National Research Council, that - with about 8.000 employees - is a public organization with the duty to carry out, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge and scientific-technological development; - the system of the 3 Sicilian Universities (Palermo, Catania and Messina) and its branches and departments that provides specific technical and scientific support. Starting from last year, and till the 2015, the District Consortium is involved in several ambitious projects (partially funded for about 50M‚¬ by the Italian Ministry of Education & Research) in the fields of Health & Biotechnology, Energy Efficiency, and Electronic & New Materials. In particular€¦ - the research into the Hippocrates Project (health & biotechnology) aims to develop an advanced innovative system based on micro-and nano-technologies with the final goal of an early diagnosis, prevention and effective treatment of diseases, in a cost-effective format, for the adoption of a patient centric model; - the research into the Energetic Project (energy efficiency) aims to face the major issues on the photovoltaic system technologies with a wide approach on the aspects of : a) new processes and architectures for materials and energy generation, b) Hw & Sw infrastructures to support energy efficiency in home, building, and campus; - the research into the Plastics Project (electronic & new materials) aims to research, experiment, develop, and implement the training on new technology platforms devoted to realize intelligent and autonomous electronic systems on plastic substrates for a single use, cheap, and finalized to new products families so called smart disposables.
